What to Do Before Your Removal Team Arrives
By Gilbert & Holle Moving Co.
Moving day can feel like a whirlwind—but with a bit of preparation, it doesn't have to be stressful. At Gilbert & Holle Moving Co., we've seen firsthand how a well-prepared home can make the entire process smoother, faster, and safer. Here's a practical guide to help you get ready before our removal team arrives.
1. Finish Packing (Yes, Everything!)
Before moving day, make sure all your belongings are fully packed and sealed. This includes items in cupboards, drawers, lofts, and garages. Last-minute packing can slow things down and increase the risk of items being misplaced.
Pro tip: Clearly label each box with its contents and destination room. This will make unpacking much easier later.
2. Declutter Before You Move
Moving is the perfect opportunity to lighten your load. Go through your belongings and decide what you truly want to keep.
Donate usable items
Recycle or dispose of unwanted goods
Set aside anything you plan to sell
The fewer items you move, the quicker—and often cheaper—the process will be.
3. Prepare an Essentials Box
Pack a separate box (or bag) with everything you'll need immediately at your new home:
Toiletries
Phone chargers
Important documents
Snacks and water
A change of clothes
Keep this with you rather than loading it onto the removal van.
4. Take Care of Valuables
Important or high-value items such as jewellery, passports, cash, and sentimental belongings should be kept with you during the move. This ensures they remain safe and easily accessible.
5. Disconnect Appliances
Make sure all appliances are unplugged, defrosted (for fridges/freezers), and ready to move. If necessary:
Drain washing machines and dishwashers
Secure loose parts
Tape doors shut
If you're unsure, ask us in advance—we're happy to advise.
6. Protect Your Property
Help us protect both your old and new homes:
Clear pathways inside and outside
Remove obstacles like rugs or clutter
Reserve parking space if possible
This allows our team to work efficiently and safely.
7. Inform the Right People
Make sure you've updated your address with:
Banks and insurance providers
Utility companies
GP and other services
Subscriptions and deliveries
Also, notify neighbours if access or parking may be temporarily affected.
8. Be Ready on Time
On moving day, try to be fully ready before the removal team arrives. This helps avoid delays and keeps everything running on schedule.
If you have any special instructions, let us know as soon as we arrive—we're here to help.
9. Do a Final Walkthrough
Before leaving your old property:
Check all rooms, cupboards, and storage spaces
Ensure nothing is left behind
Take meter readings
Lock windows and doors
A quick final check can save a lot of hassle later.
